Once a bustling Brooklyn hotspot under Charles Forman’s father, The Gaiety has fallen into disrepair, its gaslights dim and its audience all but vanished. Times have changed, and the theater hasn’t, leaving Charles to inherit a near-bankrupt relic of a bygone era. But a discovery of an electrifying new kind of performance—the underground world of male and female impersonators—sparks a bold transformation. As The Gaiety reemerges as a powerhouse of drag and vaudeville, it becomes both a cultural beacon and a target for the city’s new vice squad.
